Twenty Tips in Selling Your Business

1. Ideally you made plans to sell the business when you started or bought it, and have acted accordingly.
2. If you are “burned out” in your business, and may be hurting it, sell it before you do serious damage.
3. Ideally, you have kept accurate, well organized, and easily understood records of the business.  If not, start now.
4. Improve the “curbside appeal” of your business with paint, landscaping, etc.
5. Clean up, spruce up, straighten up the working areas of the business, especially the area occupied by the owner.
6. To establish a price, call in three Business Brokers to give three separate free appraisals of your business.
7. No matter what price you ask, the offers will come in for less, so price your business accordingly.
8. Without relinquishing control, structure your business so that you are no longer crucial to its success.
9. Do not sell to someone you know will not be successful, you are likely to get sued.

10. Do not list your business with a broker for more than three months.  If he performs well, you can always extend the listing.

11. Always use an escrow company.

12. Do not train the new owner before the close of escrow.

13. Code client information (IMPORTANT).

14. Code supplier information (IMPORTANT).

15. Get a down payment that will cover your assets.

16. Have an outside Accountant for your business.

17. Hide your “Citizen of the Year,” etc. awards.

18. Have a clean desk.

19. Take vacations.

20. Admit mistakes.

What do you want to accomplish out of networking?  Do you want to make business contacts?   Do you want to meet referral sources for your business?  Do you want to make new friends?   However you slice it — networking is about getting out there and letting people know who you are and what you do.

Every Thursday, the South Orange County Regional Chambers of Commerce has Networkers at Villa Roma in Laguna Hills from 11:30 – 1.  Join us to meet some wonderful local business professionals!

After considering feedback from group members, we have found a new home for the luncheon:  Villa Roma restaurant in Laguna Hills.  (Click here for link to google map/directions).

The new location offers a number of benefits:

• an indoor location,
• full use of the restaurant (and therefore no other guests creating noise conflicts), and
• a wider variety of high-quality food.

Please note that this change is effective immediately, and tomorrow’s lunch will be at the new location.  The new location requires us to return to the previous $18 fee, but we are confident that $18 for a great meal and more effective networking is a better value than we had going.

Note:  If you could please reach out to others who you know are planning to attend – - particularly non-member guests who may not receive this email – - and make sure that they are aware of this change, that would be extremely helpful.  Ideally, we would have rolled this change out with more notice, but some new requirements handed down from our previous location made moving quickly a necessity.
